Spinosaurus Old Pose

Description

This is my version of the old reconstruction of Spinosaurus ægyptiacus in an upright pose by Lapparent and Lavocat (1955), which in turn was based on the fossilized bones (shaded grey) described and drawn by Stromer in 1915. [link]

Known Spinosaurus bones found by Stromer: [link]

When spinosaurus was first discovered the only part of the skull palaeontologists had to work with was the right mandibular ramus (lower jaw). Since no other Spinosaurids were known, they had no idea that the snout was actually long and crocodile-like, so it made sense to restore the skull after the familiar Allosaurus skull type...

I based the skull here on Acrocanthosaurus (an Allosaurid with a short sail on its back). Acrocanthosaurus was named in 1950, and since Lapparent & Lavocat drew their reconstruction in 1955, I think Acrocanthosaurus would have been the most logical choice at the time...

Here’s the old version I did back in 2010: [link]
