Description

Sinornithosaurus millenii

Name means; 'Chinese bird-lizard'
Age: Lower Cretaceous Period (Middle Barremian)
Location: Yixian Formation, from the Sihetun locality of western Liaoning (in what is now China)
Sinornithosaurus is a genus of feathered dromaeosaurid dinosaur that caused a sensation because it was the fifth of the non - avian feathered theropod genera discovered.
Xu Xing described Sinornithosaurus and performed a phylogenetic analysis which demonstrates that it is basal among the dromaeosaurs.
He also found that features of the skull and shoulder are very similar to Archaeopteryx and other Avialae. Together these two facts demonstrate that the earliest dromaeosaurs were more like birds than the later dromaeosaurs were. This contradicts one argument made by critics of the theory that birds evolved from dinosaurs!

Looks great, and thanks for the submission. You've done a very nice job with the anatomy, especially with the shape of the head. My critiques are all pretty minor, but since you asked:

The fossil of the young Sinornithosaurus "Dave" shows a lot of fuzz around the face, so the short facial feathers probably extended down to the antorbital fenestra. It also shows a lot of long feathers near the base of the tail - a buttfan, so to speak, coming off its thighs and butt. The feather length seems to taper off as it reaches the end of the tail. I think that from the way you've drawn the feathers kind of wispy here, the third digit would probably be slightly visible, maybe just a claw sticking out from behind the hand feathers.

All nitpicky as hell stuff, yeah. I think it looks great in general. :) More than good enough to submit, so please don't redo anything - I guess just keep my critiques in mind for any possible future drawings.
